Pigeon River Gorge

Immediately adjacent to the Smokies, the Pigeon River Gorge is rugged and remote. The Appalachian Trail bisects the area beginning at Davenport Gap, and a trail shelter is located near Groundhog Creek, a tributary of the Pigeon. Scenic trails follow Groundhog Creek and Rube Rock Branch, which cascades down steep rock ledges. The Pigeon is a cherished whitewater paddling river, and backpackers enjoy loop hikes with the A.T. through ancient forests.
