Unicoi Mountains

Old-growth forests shroud the ridgelines of the Unicoi Mountains, which follow the North Carolina–Tennessee state line. The beloved Benton MacKaye Trail, considered an Appalachian Trail alternate trail, follows the Unicoi ridgeline. The Kirkland Creek Trail also winds through the area and connects to the adjacent Upper Bald River Area in Tennessee. Many rare species rely on the Unicoi’s ancient forests.
