Approximately 320 miles of the MST passes through the Pisgah-Nantahala National Forest. Only the trail sections in the Smokies, Mount Mitchell State Park, Linville Gorge Wilderness, Woods Mountain Roadless Area, and the portions immediately adjacent to the Parkway are protected; most of the remaining trail corridor is open to logging.
